Iota Pi Chapter Bylaws


Article 1: Name of the Organization

The name of this organization shall be the Iota Pi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland.

Article 2: The Objectives and Purposes of the Chapter

Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary honors organization for accounting, finance, and information systems majors. Its stated purposes includes recognizing scholastic and professional excellence in the fields of accounting, finance, or information systems with the provision of opportunities for self-development and association among members and practicing business professionals; and encouragement of a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility. To create an environment conducive to interaction between practicing professionals, students, faculty, and the community through professional activities, community services, socials, academic excellence. To complement a student's formal education with the pratical knowledge to suceed in today's financial information world.

Article 3: Membership

Requirements of attaining pledge status, (at a minimum) the student must have:
  • Declared a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems (or have stated an intention to declare a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems)
  • Completed at least one (1) year of collegiate courses (thirty plus (30+) semester hours or equivalent)
  • Attained a cumulative grade point average of an least 3.0
  • Paid a $55 pledge fee
Requirements to elevation to membership in this chapter pledge must have:
  • Declared a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems
  • Completed, in addition to two (2) years of collegiate courses, at least one upper level course beyond the business core
  • Completed two (2)successive semesters of pledging (Fall & Spring)
  • A minimum GPA 3.0 (overall & major)
  • Performed fifteen (15) Professional Hours per year
  • Performed fifteen (15) Community Service Hours per year
  • Posted resume to Beta Alpha Psi's resume bank
  • Paid a $55 member fee
Members and pledges will be moved to inactive statis if:
  • If a member's or pledge's participation level drops below fifty percent (50%) - as determined by the descretion of hte officers
  • If a member or pledge is inactive, they will not be eligible to become active again until the following semester
  • In order to regaint active status, they must have:
    • At least seventy-five percent (75%) involvement in all activities of the chapter from that point forward
    • Petitioned officers for reinstatement to active status
Method of Member Removal:
  • Member certificate will be held until one (1) semester prior to graduation
  • Member must be charged of malfeasance in writing to faculty advisor and signed by a member of Beta Alpha Psi
  • Accused member must receive a copy of charges against him/her, time, date, and place of hearing, and an explanation
  • Hearing will be held in front of officers to determine if member is to be expelled
Article 4: Meetings for the Conduct of Business

Actions which require voting are done by members only. To constitute a quorum, the following must be present:
  • President, and/or Faculty Advisor
  • Vice President
  • Fifty precent (50%) of members
Voting requirements for chapter decisions:
  • two-thirds (2/3) of all members present must approve
  • Officer elections are decided by a simple majority of votes
  • Article 5: Student Officers

    President
    The president presides at meetings of the chapter, determines that all reporting responsibilities and other duties of the vice president, secretary, and treasurer are performed in accordance with International Constitution and Bylaws; and seeks to promote the welfare of the chapter and Beta Alpha Psi. Overall, the president is the figure head and inspiration to the chapter.

    Vice President
    The vice president assists the president in the performance of the prescribed duties and acts in the president's place in the event of absence or incapacity. In the event the office of the President is vacant, the vice president shall assume the duties and responsibiities of the President.

    Treasurer
    The treasurer collects money owed to the chapter, disburses for authorized purposes, ensures that the remittance of pledges fees; initiation fees and chapter dues are paid in accordance with the Program of Chapter Activities, maintains appropriate financial records, arranges for the audit, if one is required by the Excutive Office or if one desire by the local chapter, and prepares the local Chapter's tax return.

    Secretary
    The reporter records the minutes of the meetings of the chapter; ensures that the chapter online update is completed at least annually and that the membership roster is updated as necessary; transmits to the Excutive Office a list of chapter officers within fourteen (14) days of their installation; prepares and transmits such other reports as required by the Board and the Program for Chapter Activities; and fulfills all other duties ordinarily associated with the office of the secretary.

    Website Technician
    The website technician's job is to maintain Beta Alpha Psi's two websites, the main website and the book co-op site. Information will need to be updated frequently on the main website. The co-op page will be a large job once a semester. The officers will frequently send emails to the website technician with things that need to be fixed and suggestions for improvement. The outgoing website technician will spend time with the incoming website technician to teach him/her the software involved and the normal tasks of the job.

    Members of the chapter are eligible to be officers in the chapter. The officers are nominated and then elected to the office following the guidelines for elections in the Chapter Handbook.

    The term of office for officers is from the end of the spring semester to the end of the next spring semester. Near the end of the spring semester elections are held and the officers take over their duties and prepare the chapter for the next year.

    An officer can resign when they feel they are no longer capable of fulfilling their duties. Elections for a replacement will be held in the case of a vice president, secretary, or treasurer resignaton. The replacements term will end when the rest of the officer's terms are over. In the case of a president resignation the vice president will step up to the office of president and a replacement vice president will be elected with their term ending when the rest of the officer's terms are over.

    Article 6: Faculty Advisor

    The faculty advisor serves as the advisor to the chapter and when requested to do so by the Board attests to the chapter's compliance with specified provisions of the International Constitution, Bylaws, and Program for Chapter Activities. Members nominate faculty members in the area of accounting, finance, and information systems. The faculty advisor is then elected by members of the chapter in a majority rules fashion.

    Article 7: Conduct at Regional and Annual Meetings

    Members and/or officers attending regional or annual meetings are expected to attend all events posisble (within reason). Duties of those attending are to bring back information to the chapter that is beneficial to all those who participate in chapter activities.

    Article 8: Fiscal Year

    The fiscal year of the chapter will end on April 30.

    Article 9: Authority

    These bylaws shall be the principal governing document of the Iota Pi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi.
    These bylaws will be subordinate to the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi.
    Any provision of this document that conflicts with the Internationl Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi that is currently in effect will be rendered null and void.

    Article 10: Requirements for Amendment to the Bylaws

    To amend the bylaws of the chapter there must be a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote. In establishing local chapter bylaws, refer to the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi for examples and to assure that there is no conflict between the chapter bylaws and those of Beta Alpha Psi.
