"I believe that the SU Surf Club was originally formed for a very simple purpose: to encourage surfers on campus to get together and further their enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport. Right now most of our activities are privately organized and funded, but we are hoping to increase our status on campus and eventually become a team. Our team might take vans to Ocean City for "practice" and to other states for a chance to surf new spots and compete against other surfing clubs. However, our club will never reach the competitive success of "normal" sports clubs, like lacrosse or rugby, but we're fully aware of that, it's just the nature of our sport. Surfing is more an art than a competitive sport, it isn't about winning. Everyone in this club would rather score head-high waves on a trip to North Carolina than win a contest in knee-high slop in Ocean City. This club is great because we get to meet new people who share our passion for surfing. This is especially important for new students. I remember as a freshman one of my top priorities was to meet a few surfers to go to the beach with. This is where the club comes in--this year's freshmen, just by going to a few meetings or going on a trip have met over forty surfers on campus. I think that more important than anything else, however, this club helps us keep surfing in our lives. It is so easy to get overwhelmed with all of the work that college demands. Many people lose their love for surfing simply because they are too busy or too lazy to get down to the beach. The people in this small club push each other to surf more--and this is the greatest strength of the club. We all try our best to keep surfing in our lives, despite all of the external pressures. Surfing is our peace of mind, our exercise, and simply a fun thing to do. It is something that can't be lost, and if this club has helped even one person increase their time in the water and their thoughts of surfing then I guess we're doing something right."
