Jill Stephenson joined the Sea Gull Staff in 1995 as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming programs at Salisbury University. With experience as a collegiate swimmer and coach, Stephenson is no stranger to college athletics and the demands of an intercollegiate swimming program. During her tenure, the men's and women's teams have virtually rewritten the Sea Gull record book with over 100 new records since 1995. In addition, under her tutelage, SU produced its first all-American swimmer, Chris Bembenek, who earned honorable mention status in two events at the 1998 NCAA Championship Meet. Eight Sea Gull swimmers have met provisional qualifying times for the national championship during the past three seasons. Stephenson, a native of Monroe, MI, has an extensive coaching and teaching background. She served as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming and cross-country teams for six years at Olivet (MI) College. In addition to her coaching duties, Stephenson served as an assistant professor in the department of physical education, served as aquatics director and was assistant athletic director overseeing the women's athletics program. In 1992, Stephenson joined the American Red Cross as its Emergency and Health Services Director for the Calhoun County Chapter in Battle Creek, MI. While working for the Red Cross, Stephenson remained active in swimming as an adjunct faculty member in aquatics at Kellogg Community College and also coached at several camps and clinics throughout the Midwest. Stephenson earned her bachelor of science in physical education from Northern Michigan University in 1983, where she was a four-year swimming letter winner, and received her master's in sports management from Southern Illinois University in 1986. In addition to working as an assistant coach at her alma mater for one season, Stephenson served as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois for two years prior to joining the staff at Olivet College. In addition to her duties as the SU men's and women's coach, Stephenson also works as SU's aquatics director, overseeing teaching and community programs, serves as the assistant athletic director and as an instructor in the physical education department.
Assistant Coach Jason
Mohring Jason Mohring, a native of Allentown Pennsylvania, will be joining the Sea Gull staff this season following an impressive academic and athletic career. Jason attended Salisbury High School and competed for the Emmaus Aquatic Club qualifying for the State Meet three times. Follwoing graduation from Salisbury High School Jason attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania located in Western Pennsylvania. During his years at IUP, Jason was named an IUP scholar athlete, PSAC All-Conference Team member, was a member of the school record 200 Medley Relay team, and qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship Meet with a "B" cut in the 100 Breaststsroke. Jason graduated from IUP with a B.S. in Sports Administration and a minor in Business Administration. Following a summer with the Ocean City Beach Patrol, Jason will be studying Applied Health Physiology with a concentration in either strength and conditioning or fitness and wellness.
